There are many different ways posted on the internet on how to fix this issue. I tried many solutions I found posted on forums and blogs but nothing worked for me. I was able to find a work around that fixed our Sony Vaio desktop with Windows XP at my work.
Here are the steps I took to fix the issue:
1. Boot using XP installation disc.
2. On the Setup screen, press R to choose Recovery Console.
3. It will then look for Windows installations, and will show you a list. Most likely there is only one: Just type the number 1 and hit ENTER.
4. You will then be prompted to enter your password:
5. Run CHKDSK first. Type CHKDSK /p. /p will check even if the drive is not flagged bad.
After running CHKDSK /p, I received a message saying "this computers appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record."
6. This is when I thought of running FIXMBR:
Type "exit" without the quotes to quit recovery console. Reboot your computer and that should do it.
Hope this post/tutorial helps! Thank you for checking.
